Welcome to Barbados! If you want, you can take any one of the free shuttle from the gangway of your ship to the terminal building. Photo © 2008 Bart de Boer

Bridgetown's cruise ship terminal is a mini-mall and my guess is that some passengers will never venture further. Which is too bad, as Barbados is arguably one of the Caribbean's most diverse islands. You will have to organize transportation though as the cruise ship dock is a fair distance from any of the island's sights. With a fleet of taxi's waiting outside that should be no problem! There are many tours on offer in Barbados, but we decide to take a taxi to the rugged Atlantic coast. We are lucky in having Colin as our driver. Colin is a father of three and knows all about the island. For US$ 50 he drives us to Bathsheba Beach, one of the most famous spots on Barbados' Atlantic coast. Photo © 2008 Bart de Boer

Where Barbados' west coast is lapped by the tranquil Caribbean Sea, the island's east coast is windswept and prone to the crashing waves of the Atlantic. Photo © 2008 Bart de Boer

Downtown Bridgetown can be very busy. It is one of the few cruise ship destinations that hasn't been taken over by tourists so instead of diamond shops be prepared to find many shops catering to the local populations. Much nicer! Photo © 2008 Bart de Boer

If you cross the Chamberlain Bridge, you will stumble across a small marina with many restaurants and bars. Perfect for a late afternoon drink overlooking the hustle and bustle of Bridgetown. Photo © 2008 Bart de Boer

Be sure to peek into St. Michael's Cathedral in the center of Bridgetown, one of the oldest churches on the island. Photo © 2008 Bart de Boer

Barbados is full of churches, often built in that peculiar English style which make them look out of place in the tropics. Still the tropical foliage definitely adds something to the stern building style. Pictured is St. John's Parish Church on the east side of the island. Photo © 2008 Bart de Boer
