Dubai's cruise port is located relatively close to the city center, but don't even think of taking a stroll t town - walking in the port area is strictly forbidden. Taxis are always available in front of the terminal building and with extremely low taxi fares there is no better way to get around in the sprawling city.

Seen from the decks of AIDAcara is Dubai's original city centre. It is located at the banks of the Dubai Creek where traditional wooden boats and ferries are overlooked by glass skyscrapers.

Ladies, brace yourself! The Gold Soukh is heaven on earth for lovers of bling bling. Shop after shop of gold and silver attract not only tourists, but also many locals.

For even more elaborate ways to part you from your hard-earned money, take a taxi to the Mall of the Emirates, the largest shopping mall in the area. Buy a Jaguar and get a private jet. Or was it the other way around? Be sure to plan the work before setting off and work the plan once you get there using the mall's website.

In Dubai, everything is possible. Seen here is the Café St. Moritz, right in the middle of the Mall of the Emirates. And yes, it is snowing outside! Ski Dubai is currently the largest indoor ski slope in the world. You have to see it to believe it!

Famous Dubai landmark is the Burj al Arab Hotel, the tallest hotel in the world. This playground of the rich and famous is guarded by fences and barriers, but visitors are welcome for any of the guided tours, lunch or dinner. Bring your wallet!

For a slightly more 'normal' experience, head next door to the Jumeirah Beach Hotel. We enjoyed a terrific afternoon tea here.

It's not all gold that shines in the old part of town. Don't forget to visit the spice soukh, looking like anything you had hoped for in Arabia. Most vendors are originally from Iran and if you are into spices and herbs, you will love it here.

If your cruise begins or ends in Dubai, why not add a few hotel nights so you can can explore all that the United Arab Emirates have to offer. If you have the money, you might opt for the opulent Burj al Arab. But if you travel on a less extravagant budget, there are some hidden treasures. Located in the residential Jumeirah area close to beach and shopping is the recently opened La Maison d'Hôtes. Run by two charming French ladies, this luxury guest house consists of three separate buildings and is our tip for a great stay in Dubai.
