Venice photos

Perched between the Italian mainland and the Adriatic Sea, Venice is located in the midst of a marshy lagoon and comprises of 118 small islands. The city of Venice is connected to the mainland by a causeway for trains and cars, but once on the island cars are completely useless as ... well ... there are no roads. Sailing in or out the city on a cruise ship involves some interesting maneuvering, so be sure to stand out on deck! Photo © 2008 Bart de Boer

The Venetian Republic was an important force in the Middle Ages and Renaissance and thankfully the look and feel of the city hasn't changed much - albeit for the droves of tourists that visit the city. Photo © 2007 Bart de Boer

Famous Piazza San Marco. By day, it is filled with tourists. By night, it is decidedly less crowded. Especially if the weather gods are in a bad mood - as pictured here. Photo © 2008 Bart de Boer

Venice... the name conjures up images of gondolas, canals, bridges and a lot of beautiful Renaissance architecture. Located on a number of islands in the Venetian Lagoon, Venice is one of the most remarkable cities in Europe, seemingly being built on water.

My recommendation is to discover Venice on foot. As the city is completely car free, there is no real alternative but traveling over water... The city is remarkably accessible on foot, but be sure to bring a city map as you are easily lost in the maze of backstreets and alleys. But it is off the beaten tourist paths that you get a true sense of the city.

Gondolas are a part of Venice and while the sleek boats are hardly ever used in daily life, tourists can't wait to jump into one and be serenaded by a gondolier. Oh sole mio and what not! Be sure to find out where you get best value for money, as gondola rides are BIG business in Venice.

The Rialto Bridge is among the best known landmarks of Venice. Originally built to cope with increasing traffic to the Rialto market on the eastern bank of the Grand Canal, the current bridge was completed in 1591 and is home to many shops and attracts droves of tourists..

A gondola is a Venetian rowing boat. While mainly used for tourists these days, gondolas once were the main means of transportation in Venice.

One of our favorite buildings in Venice is St. Mark's Basilica, another Venetian landmark. Standing guard over St. Mark's Square, this is one of best examples of Byzantine architecture in the world. Connected to the Doge's Palace, the church cannot be missed. It can be visited, but usually long, long lines stretch across St. Mark's Square. So come here early in the morning or late in the afternoon.

Venice is the embodiment of "La Dolce Vita" and the combination of canals, flowers and colors make it a picture-perfect city. Be sure to bring an extra memory card for your camera!

Venice's cruise ship terminal is actually at walking distance from all the main attractions. But the highlight of your cruise might well be sailing out of Venice. Your cruise ship will sail right through the city, allowing you unprecedented views of the beauty of Venice. Yes, Venice definitely gets our vote for "most spectacular sailaway"!
