Villefranche
France
We visited Villefranche on a Sunday morning in December. The few boutiques were open and locals were sitting reading the paper on a terrace in the winter sun. Come in July and you are overrun with tourist here huge cruise ships anchor in the picture-perfect bay and tenders ferry passengers ashore. Villefranche is located at a stone's throw from Nice and all sights along the French Riviera are easily accessible from this deepwater port. The colorful waterfront and the picturesque Old Town have a distinct Italian feel as Villefranche was under foreign rule until 1860. Once you are done sightseeing, be sure to go to one of the many terraces and order an 'apéritif'. C'est bon!
