A Day in Mykonos, Greece
The island of Mykonos was high on my travel wish list for a long time. As a child, I had seen photos of a picture-perfect white-and-blue town bordered by barren hills and a deep blue sea and couldn't wait to visit. My first attempt failed when Star Clipper's Star Flyer had to bypass Mykonos because of (very) high winds. My second attempt came in 2013 when I cruised the Mediterranean on Ruby Princess. The ship sailed from Piraeus under glorious clear summer skies and was scheduled to dock at Mykonos at 1.00 AM. Crew and passengers alike were excited: Mykonos has quite a reputation when it comes to nightlife and many made plans to dance through the night in one of the island's many clubs and bars. But as soon as we had left Piraeus, the Captain spoilt the party by announcing that due to high winds (again!) the ship would not dock overnight.

When I woke up that morning and looked out of the window, I could see whitecaps on the sea and I feared that I would once again miss Mykonos. But then our Captain announced that instead of docking he would anchor Ruby Princess close to the dock and allow the massive ship to provide shelter for tenders to run back and forth to the dock. And so, on this windy July morning in 2013 I set foot on the island of Mykonos. It was love at first sight. Rather touristy, rather expensive and rather hedonistic - but beautiful in its simplicty. My friends and I spent a full day wandering through the maze of streets and alleys, lingering over coffee on a terrace and later having lunch overlooking the harbor. Later, back on board, we agreed: Mykonos is a must-see!
