As Sunday morning turns into Sunday afternoon, Carnival Liberty arrives in Dubrovnik, Croatia. The beautiful coastline gives way to the sprawling suburbs of Croatia's most popular town. Heavily damaged in the Yugoslavian war, Dubrovnik was completely rebuilt to its former glory and is now one of the most "in" places in the Eastern Mediterranean. Recognized as an UNESCO World Heritage Site, the old walled town of Dubrovnik is a sight to behold.

Carnival Liberty docks at Gruz Port, located 2 miles from the Old Town. As this is the ship's maiden call, a band plays quayside and such is the impact of the Carnival calls to this town that the local agent offers free shore excursions for all of Carnival Liberty's guests. With six cruise ships in port today, the Stradun or main street is literally buzzing with people; still, there is still room on terraces and in one of the many alfresco dining spots dotted around the pretty Old Town. It is wonderful to stroll around the many backstreet alleys, discovering how the locals live. From the massive fortifications, the view of the red roofed buildings is fascinating and the steep climb up the city walls is a "must-do" during any visit to Dubrovnik.

Overheated we sit down and order a cool drink on one of the trendy terraces. All too soon we have to return to our ship. In the evening light, with Elaine Page singing Andrew Lloyd Webber songs on the giant poolside screen, Carnival Liberty sets out to sea again. With a relaxing day at sea to look forward to, we can't wait to explore the nightlife on board. But first: dinner!
