Being a long-established shipping company its advantages.
Back in the seventies, Holland America Line was the first
cruise line to recognize that their guests might enjoy a
casual buffet breakfast or lunch on the upper decks, close
to sea air and swimming pool. And so the line's famous Lido
Restaurant was born. |

Nowadays there is not a single cruise ship that doesn't
have some sort of casual poolside eatery, but
here on board
Rotterdam it is clear that Holland America still knows
best. Without exception, the food served in the Lido
Restaurant is fresh, well-prepared and attractively
presented. Located up on deck 8, the Lido Restaurants

with many more seats available on the open air pool deck aft
or the all-weather pool deck amidships. The Lido Restaurant
serves breakfast, lunch and a casual self-service dinner at
set hours
with soups, salads and ice cream available most of
the day. And should you crave a burger, fries and a hot dog,
head for the
Terrace Grill on the Lido Deck amidships. It is open
between 12.00 NOON and 7.00 PM.
Every day! |

For a formal dining experience, head down to the
Pinnacle Grill on Lower Promenade Deck. This specialty
restaurant is located on one of the lower decks and has no
windows. Still, the classy decor, fine steaks and seafood
make this a very popular place. And together with the
neighboring wine tasting bar, the culinary aspect is well
covered here.

Named after the famous restaurant on board the Rotterdam of
1959 (there is a beautiful model of the ship at the entrance),
the two-deck high La Fontaine Dining Room is quite impressive
with its grand staircases, fresh flower displays and fine
views. In true Holland America tradition, there are quite some
tables for two and there is a lot of space between tables.
During our Jazz Cruise, the food served in the La Fontaine
Dining Room was simply outstanding and
subject to
many
rave reviews. |

There is one more place to hunt for food - day or night. The
Explorations Café is a library/coffee bar concept that can be
found on nearly all Holland America ships. The coffee bar is
really popular and is busy most hours - perhaps because of the
delicious cookies and other snacks that are available here as
well. Still, we found out that there is nothing more relaxing
than sitting down in one of the oversized chairs or couches
with an equally oversized cup of cappuccino and a book or two.

And just when you think you have seen it all, there is
that late-night display of typical Dutch farmer food.
Featuring curious delicacies like 'oliebollen',
'maatjesharing', and 'erwtensoep', this is another one of
Holland America's oh so quirky ways to remember you about
the roots of this proud company. |
