ShipParade CruiseShipTour: Azamara Pursuit
Text & Photos © 2018 Bart de Boer - Amenities, decor, charges and services might have changed since this article was written

On August 28, 2018, not one but two champagne bottles crashed on the hull of Azamara Pursuit. The third ship in the Azamara Club Cruises fleet was named during a festive ceremony in the British port of Southampton and marks a hefty 35% capacity increase for the boutique cruise line.

Azamara Pursuit first entered service in 2001 as R Eight the eighth and final vessel for Renaissance Cruises. In early 2018 the ship (then named Adonia) was purchased by Azamara Club Cruises and first sent to Freeport in the Bahamas for a spell in drydock. She then proceeded to Belfast, Northern Ireland where her interiors were completely refurbished. Azamara did a wonderful job making Azamara Pursuit feel like new. At 30,000 tons she is perfectly sized, accommodating 700 guests and 400 crew. She is small enough to sail to smaller ports but she is not too small to feature multiple specialty restaurant, a decent pool deck and spacious bars and lounges. Let's start our tour!

Staterooms come in inside, outside (with partly obstructed views or with uninterrupted sea views) and balcony variety. All varieties are more or less similar with a modern and luxurious decor and a practical layout. Bathrooms are on the small side (you may call it "compact"), but I must admit Azamara did a great thing making them feel a little more spacious. Still, count on the shower curtain to be intrusive... The bed to be very comfortable, with excellent bedding and reading lights that double as USB ports. My balcony stateroom had a small love seat that could double as a foldout third bed, plus a small balcony. Interestingly, Azamara has placed a full dining table and two chairs on the balcony, instead of the usual small coffee table and two chairs with ottomans.

Azamara Pursuit's suites are worth the extra buck. Not only can you look forward to more space, Azamara Club Cruises make sure guests in selected suite categories are pampered even more with free Internet packages, butler service and free laundry service. We inspected the Club Continent Suites, which are basically extra-wide, extra-elegant staterooms. Biggest plus is the larger balcony and a more spacious bathroom with walk-in shower. The Club World Suites and Club Owner's Suite are quite extravagant with wrap-around balconies offering either front or aft views, separate bedrooms and ultra modern bathrooms. A little out of the way, all the way up on deck 9, are two Club Spa Suites that feature a glassed-in bathroom with large tub with sea views.

On deck 10 forward you can find my favorite public area. The Living Room is just what its name implies: a living room. Inviting by day and night, this is the social heart of Azamara Pursuit. The many intimate corners, sweeping views forward through floor to ceiling windows and the inviting bar and dance floor make this by far the most popular place on the ship. On the same deck, but all the way aft are Azamara Pursuit's two specialty restaurants. Aqualina on port side serves up Italian classics, while Prime C is home to steaks and seafood. Just forward of the specialty restaurants is another gem: thankfully the library has changed very little since the Renaissance days.

The Pool Deck can be found amidships on deck 9. The swimming pool is not overly large but sufficient for a ship of this size. There are more than enough padded lounge chairs, love seats and cozy corners for both sun- and shade seekers. With the Pool Bar on one side and the very popular casual dining venue (The Patio) on the other, it's more like an open air lounge area than a traditional Pool Deck. We enjoyed a late lunch at The Patio one afternoon, ordering simple dishes from a small but complete menu featuring burgers, hot dogs, wraps and salads. Azamara Club Cruises operates on an all-inclusive concept where house wines and liqors are included (premium brands come at a price though). So nothing prevents you from ordering a glass of wine or beer to accompany that salad or burger!

All the way aft on deck 9 is Azamara Pursuit's buffet restaurant. It is called Windows and at first glance the room looks rather sparse with row after row of tables and chairs. Still, the layout is such that you will find many tables for two and given the fact that the room is not overly large, Azamara have probably found the best way to seat as many guests as possible. The buffet area is quite large with breakfast, lunch and dinner served here daily. At breakfast, keep an eye out for the colorful trays of freshly carved fruit - they look very pretty indeed. Automatic doors lead to the attractive outdoor terrace. Even on chilly evenings you will be able to dine outdoors, thanks to built-in heaters. Azamara Pursuit does not have an outdoor bar like her sisters Azamara Journey and Azamara Quest, making room for more tables and chairs to enable more guests to enjoy alfresco dining.

From deck 9, we descend to deck 5 which is completely given over to public rooms. Forward is the Cabaret Lounge where you can expect some fine entertainment in the best cruise ship tradition. Although Azamara Pursuit does not offer lavish Broadway shows, the ever-present Cruise Staff will make sure that guests are entertained with small-scale shows. In addition, the line schedules some great events outdoors including the popular "White Night".

Generally, Azamara Pursuit is a carbon copy of her two sisters. But there is one major difference. Azamara Pursuit has no casino. The area given over to gambling on Azamara Journey and Azamara Quest is completely remodeled as shore excursions office on this ship. And what a wonderful enhancement it is. Azamara now partners with AFAR Media and this area is where you can find books, magazines and destination-oriented information. After all, Azamara Club Cruises are renowed for their destination-rich itineraries and the ships generally stay in port longer than comparable cruise lines. Adjacent to the Shore Excursion area, the popular The Den is decorated very elegantly and its contemporary look with a very inviting bar is a far cry from the vessel's previous decor which featured heavy drapes and red and golden opulence.

Walking forward from The Den we pass by two shops and arrive at the upper level of the attractive two-deck high Atrium which is surrounded by inviting couches and chairs. On the port side you will find a new Art Gallery while the starboard side is given over the superb Mosaic Cafe, Azamara Pursuit's coffee and pastry bar. Specialty coffees are included in the fare, as are delicious pastries and cakes. And very intelligently, the Mosaic Cafe is located right in the center of deck 5, close to the Discoveries Restaurant. So your after dinner espresso is never far away.

Aft on deck 5 is the ship's main dining room, the spacious Discoveries Restaurant. You reach it by means of a very attractive bar, aptly named Discoveries Bar, which is perfect for pre-dinner cocktails. Azamara Pursuit has an open seating dining policy with a very relaxed dress code. In the Discoveries Restaurant, the line has provided many tables for two. During my two nights on board, I was impressed with the menu choices and the quality of the food. With house wines included in the fare, the dining experience is definitely lifted a notch over other cruise lines.

Azamara Pursuit is looking really, really good. She has been pulled into a more modern world by means of a refit that was very thorough and well executed. Azamara Club Cruises delivers a cruise experience that is halfway premium and ultra luxury. Their all-inclusive offering is interesting, with standard house wines and liqors included. This pleases most guests and indeed if you look at the bar list there is a LOT available without having to pay a cent extra. Add to that the no-tipping-required policy, Azamara Pursuit's ultra friendly crew, the lively on board atmosphere and the innovative, destination-oriented itineraries and you will soon realize that Azamara Club Cruises is one of the best kept secrets in the cruise industry.
