Rotterdam - Holland America Line - cruise ship review and photos.

On Sunday morning, Captain Jan Smit steers his Rotterdam north towards the Swedish coast after spending the night zigzagging between the Danish islands. We are scheduled to arrive at Gothenburg at 12.00 Noon and despite the strong winds our ship arrives right on time.

Shuffleboard and two funnels

Välkommen till Göteborg! We have looked forward to our reunion with the Swedish city that we have so many fond memories of. But alas, the Scandinavian summer once again shows its ugly face and our day is marred with heavy rain and gale force winds. Thankfully, Rotterdam offers a welcome respite from the adverse weather conditions. Let's hit the Explorations Café!

Up on Sky Deck is the ship's observation lounge, appropriately called the Crow's Nest. During Rotterdam's last refurbishment, the room's layout was changed somewhat to incorporate a hi-tech sound and light system that makes the room more popular as a late-night spot. This is one of many product enhancements Holland America has been introducing in order to attract a younger clientele. One other feature is The Loft, a great hangout for kids with a dedicated disco, playroom and what not. Sadly, it was completely deserted during our cruise.

With the weather being what it is (dreadful), Rotterdam's acres of beautiful teak covered open decks get little or no attention. Which is too bad, as this ship has great warm-weather facilities. There are two pools, one of which can be covered by a glass magrodome, overlooked by an oversized sculpture of two sea lions. It also has two Jacuzzis and a very popular Pool Bar.
